52 on Friday – My Favorite Book

This week’s theme is our Favorite Book. One of my all-time favorite books is The Thornbirds by Colleen McCullough. It is one of those books that is so captivating you want to stay up all night reading it. You just cannot put it down! I am one of those people who will read a book, then re-read it in a year or so. My husband thinks I’m nuts to do this, but I think it’s the same as watching your favorite movie multiple times. It just gets better each time you watch it – a book just gets better each time you read it!  Here’s a short synopsis borrowed from this site:  Powered by the dreams and struggles of three generations, THE THORN BIRDS is the epic saga of a family rooted in the Australian sheep country. At the story’s heart is the love of Meggie Cleary, who can never possess the man she desperately adores, and Ralph de Bricassart, who rises from parish priest to the inner circles of the Vatican…but whose passion for Meggie will follow him all the days of his life.

The majority of The Thorbirds is set in Australia, and I know we have some native Aussies here on this blog ring who could probably tell you that these do not look like Australia, but please give me a bit of leeway – this was the best I could do here in Connecticut. 🙂  In the book they describe the landscape, and the tall grasses that dry out in the drought. I found some tall grasses here and took Tucker out for a hike. This is what I came up with:

  1. Amazing! How did you get such warmth in your photo when I know that your thermometer that day registered 18 degrees? This is a lovely photo of your lucky Tucker. I could never get through the Thornbirds in my youth……….times, how they have changed! I may just pick it up again. 😉

  2. You captured the lighting and softness of the scence beautifully. And Tucker does a great job expressing the theme of Thornbirds. I never read the book, but did see the tv series. Enjoyed it.

  3. I love this. The Thornbirds is such an intriguing and great book. I read it in late middle school (which may have been a bit early for some of the themes), but I claimed I was reading it because it was so well written.
